Shifted – Mote Evolver – Avian – London, Anh.

Còn được biết dưới cái tên Guy Brewer, Heart Beat tự hào mang anh đến Việt Nam trong ngày đầu anh đặt chân đến Châu Á qua hợp tác giữa 2 bên Heart Beat và Dekoded tại Singapore, diễn ra ở Club Canvas (ngày 7/5) và Interstellar tại Bali, Club Koh (8/5)

Hãy sẵn sàng thưởng thức thứ techno chất lừ từ một trong những gương mặt mới của dòng nhạc mà chính anh đã chọn cách giấu đi tên tuổi của mình để chuyển từ một sự nghiệp đã có tên tuổi sang với nó. Dù ai ai cũng biết bí mật này, Guy Brewer, tức Shifted, từng chơi drum & bass trong bộ đôi Commix. Dường như đó lại là một cách làm hay. Thực vậy, anh đã được đánh giá chân thật với những gì thể hiện trong tác phẩm đầu tay Drained phát hành ở Mote-Evolver của Luke Slater. Rõ ràng thoải mái hơn với tự do sáng tạo mới tìm thấy, Shifted bắt tay vào cộng tác với những tên tuổi techno triển vọng như Our Circula Sound và Syndrom Z (và tự mở label Avian cho riêng mình, với Ventress) đồng thời tiếp tục mối quan hệ đối tác với Mote-Evolver, dẫn đến tháng 4 vừa qua Crossed Paths, album đầu tay xuất sắc, ra đời. Cảm hứng của Shifted với techno đã có từ trước khi anh có bất cứ gắn bó chuyên nghiệp nào với âm nhạc, từ những track huyền thoại của ESP và Damon Wild đến những kẻ hậu sinh như ROD, Markus Suckut, Rødhåd. Shifted thường diễn ở các club techno tai tiếng trên thế giới như Berghain, Fabric, Concrete và trong các set diễn live của anh chúng ta có thể thấy anh trình diễn cùng Sigha của Circula Sound, người bạn thân.
Shifted – FULL Biography:

Muốn hiểu thành quả sáng tạo của Guy Brewere có lẽ cần một cái nhìn toàn cảnh đúng đắn về những gì xung quanh anh đã cản ngăn và đồng thời vun đắp một tài năng như thế – một sự thay đổi ngoạn mục vào mọi thời điểm luôn tiến lên phía trước trong sự tự phát và phẩm chất của riêng mình. Trong biến thiên không ngừng ấy có một hằng số làm nên sự đa dạng trong thứ âm thanh mà chính Brewer đã dày công tạo ra. Sauk hi Commix tan rã, Brewer tách khỏi gốc rễ drum n bass mà chuyển sang Berlin sinh sống, nơi sự tự làm mới và thay da đổi thịt là hiển nhiên với những con người sống ở đó và luôn tìm kiếm và thể hiện thông qua ngôn ngữ nghệ thuật. Dự án Shifted bắt đầu hình thành tại đây, một nhân vật bí danh tạo ra hình dáng cho riêng mình giữa một mảng âm thanh hoàn toàn mới toanh. Và khi tabula rasa này rèn giũa những kỹ năng thật đặc sắc của techno, sự tự mày mò cố hữu đã không gọi mà trỗi dậy, và khả năng sáng tác của Brewer (đầy đặn hơn từ suốt quãng thời gian tại Anh) đã ngay lập tức quay trở lại bủa vây lấy anh.

Sự tái khẳng định quá khứ, hoàn toàn xứng đáng để khẳng định tương lai, từ đó đã tự minh chứng trở thành một cú huýt thẳng vào âm nhạc của anh. Từ khi ra đời, âm thanh của Brewer dưới cái tên Shifted đã chuyển hóa thành một sự tinh túy hài hòa của âm thanh và khoảng lặng, của chất và âm – một tinh thần thực nghiệm thuần khiết dựa trên một nền tảng vững chắc. Từ album đầu tay với Mote Evolver của Luke Slater tới Bed of Nails của Dominick Fernow và đến cả những ấn phẩm mới hơn ở dấu ấn âm nhạc Avian của chính anh (nơi ra đời các thể nghiệm techno từ Skarn của Alessandro Cortini (cựu thành viên Nine Inch Nails), đến SHXCXCHCXSH, Peder Mannerfelt và nhiều cái tên khác). Tác phẩm của Brewer xuất chúng bởi khả năng kết hợp nhưng không thỏa hiệp, và đồng thời vẫn ghi dấu ấn riêng bên cạnh những đặc trưng âm thanh chiều lòng những fan cứng nhất, đẩy lùi các ranh giới âm thanh và khiến người nghe phải suy ngẫm đến âm thanh từ techno phá cách, điện tử, noise và nhạc thể nghiệm nói chung. Với mục đích đẩy xa hơn nữa những rào cản âm thanh, Brewer cũng cho ra đời nhiều dự án âm nhạc khác, tiêu biểu nhất là Covered In Sand (drone-techno) phát hành với hãng đĩa anh em Mira, với Hospital Productions và nhiều nữa, hay các tác phẩm u ám mang màu sắc soundtrack u ám với Alexander Lewis (label của Blackest Ever Black, Endangered Species của Vereker). Trong sự đa năng này vẫn có đó sự tận tụy không ngừng dành cho một xu hướng âm nhạc không bao giờ ngoảnh lại – nó đòi hỏi anh phải giữ cho mình một tinh thần thuần khiết, không khoan nhượng cần có ở một nghệ sĩ chơi nhạc điện tử: một hình mẫu nghệ sĩ nổi loạn  dấn thân vào những lãnh thổ âm thanh mới bằng sự hứng khởi và cam kết với một âm thanh luôn luôn trù phú chất lượng.

Be prepared to experience very textured techno from one of the genre’s new key players, whom in order to avert attention from a famed career within another genre, has chosen to remain anonymous. Although it is a public secret Guy Brewer aka Shifted used to be part of drum & bass duo Commix. Staying anonymous appears to have worked. Rather than comparisons to his prior achievements, the talk regarding his output has been centred on Shifted’s often bleak—and always textually rich—run of releases. In truth, he was always likely to be taken in earnest with a debut (Drained) on Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver. Evidently buoyed by his new-found creative freedom, Shifted went on to work with promising upstart techno imprints Our Circula Sound and Syndrome Z (and started his own, Avian, with fellow shadow-seeker Ventress) while continuing a relationship with Mote-Evolver which culminated in April of this year with Crossed Paths, his striking debut album. Shifted’s interest in techno predates any serious involvement with the music industry, with time-honoured tracks by ESP and Damon Wild rubbing up against exciting newcomers like ROD, Markus Suckut and Rødhåd. Shifted often plays the infamous techno clubs in the world such as Berghain, Fabric, Concrete and during his live sets you can see him teaming up b2b with his close friend Sigha of “Our Circula Sound.”

Shifted – FULL Biography:
To understand Guy Brewer’s creative output is perhaps more of a perceptive outlook onto the surroundings that have harnessed and fertilized such a mutable yield – a progressive change that is at all times moving forward in its’ impulsivity and temperament. In that dynamic of change is the very constant that has defined the diverse artistic range in sound artistry that Brewer has come to master in his own right. After the dissolution of his esteemed group Commix, Brewer uprooted his UK drum n bass beginnings and transplanted himself to Berlin, where reinvention and transformation is of second nature to its’ inhabitants that restlessly seek and speak through artistic language. The project Shifted began to take form in this realm of new possibility, an anonymous figure allowing shape amidst a new-found blank slate of sound. As much as this tabula rasa was cultivating a profound dexterity within the genres of techno, inherent know-how inevitably surfaced as nature does usually so influence nurture, and Brewer’s compositional command (arguably honed throughout his seasoned years in the UK) came back to positively haunt him in no time.

This reclamation of a past, worthy of upholding into the future, has since proven a positive sweep into the magnetism of his music as a whole. Since inception, Brewer’s Shifted moniker has grown into a unique yet encompassing mastery of sound and space, texture and tonalities — a pure spirit of experimentalism with a foundational functionality. From his debut on Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver label, to Dominick Fernow’s (Vatican Shadow) Bed Of Nails and to his recent recordings for his own smartly curated imprint, Avian (home to techno experiments from Alessandro Cortini’s Skarn(former Nine Inch Nails), Peder Mannerfelt, SHXCXCHCXSH, and more) Brewer’s work radiates in its’ capacity to meld to context and circumstance without artistic compromise, and at once to color outside purist lines, pushing boundaries and provoking thought in a call to progressive techno, electronic, noise and experimental music as a whole. With the intention of pushing various forays further, Brewer has also birthed numerous other projects, notably the techno-drone outfit Covered In Sand (with releases on Avian’s sister label, Mira, Hospital Productions and more) and the doomy soundtrack wielding of Alexander Lewis (home on Blackest Ever Black, Vereker’s Endagered Species). In this versatility there is a steadfast dedication to a perpetual movement forward — arguably leaving Brewer to embody a pure, unadulterated spirit of what it means to be an electronic musician: a rebel artist treading new territories with a fascination and fixation to craft brilliance with a new noise.
