INTERVIEW: ETAPP KYLE – HEART BEAT SAIGON – 5 JUNE 2015 @ THE OBSERVATORY
When did your love affair with Electronic Music begin?
– I’ve always been interested and somehow involved in music. All this has been going on since my early childhood when I was going to music school, played piano and even took part in the choir. In regards to electronic music I guess we meet when I went to my first House party. If I’m not mistaken I was 16. Still remember that night… Eventually it changed everything and I realized what I wanted to stick to this.
Who and what influenced you to get into it?
– I don’t really remember honestly. It seems like we just went to that party with a friend of mine. There was a lot of fuss about the invited DJ a few days before, and since we had never been to such a party we decided to go.
What was your biggest motivation to move to Berlin?
– Music, my friends and colleagues from Ostgut team.
What’s your favorite place on earth you have visited or lived so far?
– There are many places I’ve already been to and I’m in love with. I can mention Tel Aviv, Cape Town as good examples but the most important for me is my home and the place where my studio is. Nowadays that’s Berlin.
What was one of your best gigs of this last 12 months and how many gigs do you actually play per year?
– It’s simply impossible to pick only one. I think previous season was one of the best years of my life. There were absolutely incredible parties with the Klockworks team. I also had an unforgettable experience in Tel Aviv, St. Petersburg and Amsterdam – which has become my second home. And of course in Berlin at Berghain. To play there it’s always something special and just incomparable…
What is your expectation with Vietnam and is there something you want to see, eat or try when you are there?
– Usually expectations make it easy being disappointed, therefore I prefer to plan less and just see what happens. I don’t know much about Vietnam but I’d love to discover everything for myself especially when I have this amazing opportunity to visit.
Would you be willing to share one or some of your favorite productions you are listening to at the moment and your favorite techno productions of all time?
– I recently got a promo of a forthcoming release by Evigt Mörker, a producer from Stockholm, and there is a track which I simply can’t stop playing and listening to. This guy works with melodies a lot. His production is unbelievably deep and thoughtful. I think I love everything he’s made so far. In regards to my all time favorites, I don’t really think I’m able to pick only one.
What is your production output per year (how many tracks you produce, how many tracks get published)?
– I don’t know. I never count such things. I’m quite picky and usually it takes a while to make decisions about my music. I prefer to get back to finished productions in a few months and to take a fresh look, to play it out on a big sound system. It helps to see my own music from another perspective.

#. Etapp Kyle It took dj and producer Etapp Kyle just a short time to make a giant leap from a stay-at-home audiophile to a status as hero on the decks, attracting audiences of hundreds and thousands. By now it’s clear he made the right moves – this young Ukranian artist is developing rapidly.
Today Etapp Kyle is on the threshold of a new level of creativity, alongside Techno music’s key artists. His studio work is being met with critical acclaim by respected artists and labels. Thus, his debut four tracker EP got released on Ben Klock’s label Klockworks, finally reaching the attention he deserves, channeling his music through sound systems of festivals and clubs worldwide. Having enlisted the support and interest of Russia’s Techno institution ARMA17, he made his first appearance in Moscow a couple of years ago and held a residency there until 2014. These days he is travelling across the world made and also made camp with the Ostgut team.
With the most sophisticated combinations of Techno sounds of the dance floor, Etapp Kyle invites us to explore the depths of a piercing cold canyon, now and then carrying fleetingly to a textural and hardly tangible landscape of a forest at night, with softness and smooth motion of warm air. His love for dark and dynamic sounds finds its expression in the mixing with soft melodies and powerful grooves creating transparent, disembodied imprints of an illusory atmosphere.
